Education
We are surrounded by water
Lately, that water hasn’t been doing so great. Most of your students will continue to live here in their adulthood. Will they know how to care for their environment?
Stony Brook University concluded that 2023 was the worst year for toxic algae blooms on Long Island. From June to October, all major bays and estuaries experienced toxic algae blooms and oxygen-depleted dead zones. Dead zones are areas characterized by low or depleted oxygen levels. According to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, marine waters should always maintain at least three milligrams of dissolved oxygen per liter to sustain fish life. Throughout the summer or 2021, over twenty sites across Long Island failed to meet this standard, leading to fish kills in several instances.
These are problems that need to be solved. While new initiatives and innovative solutions are being created and implemented around the world to solve similar problems, your students can be the ones who solve the problem here. By exposing them now to how our local ecosystem works, they can become the visionaries, leaders, and solutionists of the future.
At Living Art Aquariums, we specialize in the installation and maintenance of salt and fresh water learning aquariums in schools across Suffolk County. We make it easy for you to enrich your students’ education through hands on experiences. Our business is the direct result of participation in our high school’s hands on Marine Science program. It opened our minds and appreciation for the underwater world. What will it do for your students? We believe in a better tomorrow and we’d like to help get us there. Let us know how we can help you start or enhance your current marine science programs.
